The Bridge

Called “The world’s most photographed object‚” the Golden Gate Bridge is devilishly hard to photograph well. Easily recognized, documented ad nauseum and accessible from all sides, The Bridge is a subject that I never expect to master. We moved to San Francisco when I was about 11 and I have countless images on film and digital media that fail to say anything new about it. This gallery is a selection of those that seem to me to actually work – needles in the photo haystack.

Although my work is almost exclusively landscape and nature imagery, I included The Bridge in this collection because when in its presence it feels like a wild spot. Beach footings on the San Francisco side, national recreation area on the Marin Countyside – the Golden Gate is the portal to the Pacific, and to a whole world of natural space on both sides. While seals and surfers work the breaks close to shore, the red span touches habitat that is home to deer, coyotes, bobcats, terns, red-tailed hawks, cormorants, pelicans, turkey vultures and golden eagles.
